Overall performance of the contestants in this competition is very brilliant. Even the toddler group also showed their expert skills. The performance of the children made the jury members sigh! Among them, a few individual contestants chose a higher age group to challenge and achieved ideal results. Ding Yidi, a 9-year-old Chinese pianist from the Juilliard School of Music in the United States competed in the 11-13 year old Piano Solo Professional Group, and won the brilliant results of full marks and scholarships! His talent surprised the jury!

Yidi Ding has absorbed all kinds of music knowledge like a sponge, since he came to the United States in 2019 to study at the Juilliard School of Music. In addition to learning piano, he is also learning composition and conducting. His first concerto-"Ding Yidi's First Piano Concerto" is in process. Yidi received invitations from many organizations in the United States and Europe to perform next year. Yidi works hard to balance between his musician study and school work. Intensive learning doesn’t impact a child’s playful nature,  his parents always support him to try everything like golf, table tennis, bicycle, and running. Racing with daddy is a must do item in evening family walking.

Yidi Ding played Liszt’s "Comfort". The slow and deep sound of the piano brought the guests' mood into deep grief and nostalgia. Long and beautiful, as if entering a dreamy realm with a touch of sadness, it is also the tranquility and serenity that has not been touched in a long time.

Little Yidi’s performance deeply moved all the guests in the audience. After the end of the song, there was a long applause. All the guests were amazed by the affectionate performance of this kid from China. People come to introduce themselves to Yidi, and the chairman of a Foundation invited Yidi to have a concert at Carnegie Hall.

Yidi Ding’s Mum accept interview to share her experience

In the morning of March 30th Beijing time, Andante has been informed that 7 years Yidi Ding got the offer from Juilliard School Pre-college Program Piano Major.Yidi was selected from more than 6,000 candidates worldwide and was unanimously approved and recognized by 8 examiners on the spot. He became one of the few admitted students in the piano department. He is about to become the youngest student of Julia. This is the Chinese little piano boy——Yidi Ding.

Last June, I was invited to attend a solo concert by Ding Yidi at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. All the notes are played so touching that I couldn’t believe it was a solo concert by a 6-year-old kid who had just learned the piano for one and half years. listening to his music, also can really feel that this is indeed a performance of a 6-year-old kid, without any dazzling skills, only a great sense of music and a keen sense of music, which also reveals naughty and childlike innocence, you can really feel his enthusiastic on his music.

About Learning Piano

Yidi’s way of learning piano may be the same as most parents. After all, Yidi is still a naughty little boy, and a particularly active kid, until now, I have to fight with him every time he practices piano! During the two-hour practice time arranged every day, he will go to toilet, drink water, etc. a lot of excuses and the duration of sitting on the bench will not exceed 10 minutes! The same goes for piano lessons. After a while, he went under the chair, and after a while he hid behind the piano. Fortunately, the teacher is also very patient, saying that as long as he can play well for these 10 minutes on the piano bench! Don't ask him too much to be like an adult, not to obliterate his interest, this is the saddest thing.

We are also very grateful to the teachers for teaching students in accordance with their aptitude. In order to maintain Yidi’s nature and not extinguish his interest in music, his teacher did not arrange many etudes or finger exercises like most piano teachers. Since learning the piano at the age of 5, Yidi has played many big pieces. The skill training arranged by the teacher for Yidi is also realized by practicing different levels of music. The teacher advocates that young children should learn from having enough fun in practicing.

About Studying

As mentioned before, neither his father nor I was a musician, but in order for Yidi to learn better, we must learn more! To grow up with him! In the past two years, our family is full of music, and I have also learned to appreciate music. Our family will subscribe to various music books and magazines. Even if we don't know how to play the piano, we will at least appreciate it. We are Yidi's most loyal listeners! Yidi likes to read biographies. We have biographies of all the famous musicians. Our family subscribes to various music books and magazines.

Parts of the awards Yidi Got

Sometimes I also read to him in stories. Among them, he likes Liszt the most. Once he asked me, mother, would you be like Liszt’s father and find me many teachers? In reality, for Yidi's study, we inquired through various channels. We talked with many experts and masters to give Yidi lessons and listened to different opinions and suggestions.

There is an old saying that goes "read thousands of books, travel thousands of miles". Although he has been studying piano for two and a half years, Yidi has participated in many competitions and performances, large and small, and we have taken him abroad to study. Therefore, Yidi is not afraid of performing on stage or communicating with foreign masters. I think we must go to see the outside world more from an early age, and we must not stay behind closed doors. Even just going out to travel will let him deeply feel nature, feel the local customs, and improve his aesthetic ability. It was snowing heavily when Yidi went to New York to have the Juilliard audition. The day before the exam, Yidi had a great time playing in the snow in Central Park. I think it’s not at this time to practice piano, let him feel the beauty of the moment.

We always encourage Yidi to try something new besides piano, like playing golf, taekwondo, skiing, cycling, running, robot storms, programming, doing chemical experiments.  There are many small things he made at home, such as traffic lights, small cameras, binoculars, etc. Recently he started learning composing. Since art and music originate from life, Yidi’s young mind needs nourishment and learning in all aspects to help him understand composer’s better to make more moving songs, otherwise, things will be boring.

About growth

I think that a child must first grow into a qualified social person, be healthy physically and mentlely. Good character and behavioral integrity is more important than anything else.  So first of all, we must cultivate children's good morals, morals in the world then the cultivation of talents. I am a strict mum that never spoils Yidi, but I respect the child's nature. Although my father and I have paid a lot for his music learning, we respect his choice about what he wants to do when he grows up.  Letting music accompany a child's life is the most beautiful thing, and it is also one of the best things we want to offer him.

In the next few years, we plan to let Yidi settle down to lay a solid foundation, and try not to participate in many competitions, as the parents we will try to navigate him let him know everything relies on his hard work. He needs to get used to the ups and downs in his life, setbacks and failures to polish a better life . . .Yidi is about to start his school life in US, all his behavior will present Chinese abroad. We will try our best to cultivate him to be a person who will be beneficial to society in the future.

“There is a long and beautiful road in the world called dreams; there is also a very high and hard wall called reality; climbing over that wall is called persistence; pushing down that wall is called breakthrough; the unswerving process is called concentration Strength; the effort of not forgetting the original intention is called faith. "                                                 ——Yidi Mum

A little Pianist came from Music Festival —— Review Niu Niu Dialogue with Yidi Ding

丁一迪 艺术节.png

The 15th Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Piano Art Festival in 2019 has come to an end. In the art festival, an extraordinary "Super Piano Boy Cultivation Story-Talking between Niu Niu and Ding Yidi" attracted lots of attention, so follow it today. Let's go back to the event site to take a look at the shots of the event!

In 2005, the 7-year-old Niu Niu was the youngest student at the first Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Piano Art Festival; and this year, the art festival has reached the 15th, and who has just passed the Juilliard Pre-college exam and became the school’s current youngest student "Little Prodigy", Yidi Ding, also became the youngest student in this year's art festival. On the morning of August 25th, in the orchestra rehearsal hall of the Opera House, two piano prodigies, their mentors and parents shared the interesting things in their artistic life to the audience.

Yidi Ding with Niuniu, teachers and  the host

At the sharing event on August 25, another "little guy" beside Niuniu really attracted everyone's attention. He was the piano prodigy Yidi Ding who was just admitted to the Juilliard Preparatory Department in April this year. Not long before the event, active Yidi  Ding accidentally broke his leg while playing, but he was still accompanied by his parents in a wheelchair to participate in the day's event.

In this year's Juilliard School Pre-college Exam, Ding Yidi successfully passed the test and was admitted to Juilliard at the age of 7, becoming the youngest student at the Juilliard School. The ratio of Juilliard entrance examinations is 3000:1, which is more difficult than many world-renowned universities. In the event, when asked about Ding Yidi’s father, how did Yidi Ding get the exam? Ding Yidi’s father’s answer was rather calm: unintentionally, with the mentality of trying it out, he participated in it, and he was admitted.

Yidi Ding with Mentor Professor Zhou Keng & Professor Hongkuan Chen

Similar with young age Niu Niu. Yidi Ding has the talent and sense of music that a piano boy dreams of. Like most 8-year-olds, even though he likes the piano, he still needs the supervision of his mother; he is naughty, and a few days before the activity, he accidentally broke his leg while playing; he also prefers to play when he goes to the Juilliard exam. Rolling around in the snow, finally took the test under the "coercion and lure" of his mother.

In Professor Keng Zhou’s view, this is a talented child who should behave. He said: “Teachers should pay more attention to preserving children’s interest and imagination when training students, especially such talented students. Because it cannot be copied, and it is difficult to reproduce"

刘捷与丁一迪.png

On June 26, the "Yidi Ding Piano Solo Thanksgiving Concert" was held at the Hansen Concert Hall in Shanghai.  Chinese famous tenor Jie Liu and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra young viola performer Siyuan Zhang both were invited. The concert was a complete success.

The leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Association, Professor Keng Zhou and Professor Beihua Tang of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Mr. Haike Gong and Ms. Hong Xu, Chairman of Shanxi Hairong Group, Mr. John Zhou, Chairman of Shanghai Hansen Piano Co., Ltd. Ms.Ciling Li, President of the Lawyers Association, Ms.Ping Xu, Public Relations Director and Executive Chairman of the Liszt International Youth Piano Competition, Ms. Yilei Ding, CEO of Yixin Culture and Producer of Little Planet Music Club, Mr. Shuli Cheng, Vice President of China Architecture Design Institute, etc.

This concert is a special concert held by Yidi Ding to thank his teachers, relatives and friends before leaving for the US to study at the Juilliard. In March of this year, Ding Yidi stood out from thousands of applicants from all over the world, and was admitted to the Piano Pre-college Program of Juilliard Music School at the age of only 7. After enrolling in September this year, he will become the youngest student of Juilliard so far.

In the first half of the concert, Yidi Ding first opened with a Chinese song "Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon". Those little hands stirred up waves of slight embellishments, set aside the light accent, the rhythm was relaxed, and the music was in peace. It reveals the quiet vitality and a trace of sophistication, making people seem to see a bright moon in the sky and clouds. The following repertoires are Liszt’s "Consolation No. 3", "Mozart Sonata KV330" full movement, "Paintings of Bashu" six in group, "Bach Fantasia BWV906", "Haydn Sonata in D major". Every piece is exciting. If you don't see in person, you can hardly imagine that such wonderful music is actually produced by a child who is just over 7 years old.

Yidi Ding Accompanies the Famous Tenor Jie Liu

The first song in the second half is the "Best of Love" duet by Yidi Ding and Siyuan Zhang, a young performer of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. The tone of the whole song is melodious, sometimes low, sometimes cheerful, sometimes bleak, sometimes unrestrained, the seamless combination of Ding Yidi’s piano and Zhang Siyuan’s violin, the sound of the keys and chords is gripping, perfect interpretation of Liang Zhu’s love from tragedy to poignant and then to Perfectly circulate the process of frustration. A song "Blessings of Love" brought the entire concert to a climax, and the audience continued to applaud. The next series is "The Wild Goose", sung by singer Jie Liu, accompanied by Ding Yidi on the piano. Teacher Liu is the first Chinese tenor to win a worldwide award since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The singing voice of Teacher Liu made the concert more attractive. Followed by "Chopin Sheng #C minor impromptu Fantasia Op.66'' and "Black Cat Sheriff". Ding Yidi played "Black Cat Sheriff'' majestically. Listening to the cheerful and familiar melody makes us seem to be back in childhood. After the song, the applause could not be stopped for a long time. Amid the applause of the audience again, Ding Yidi returned to the show, and finally performed a moving "Chopin Nocturne” to end the concert.

After the concert, Ding Yidi presented flowers to his family and thanked his grandparents and parents for their nurturing, and then presented flowers to three mentors, Professor Keng Zhou, James Brawn, and Tong Jin, and thanked them for their nurturing grace. Ding Yidi’s father also thanked Professor Niankui Liu, Professor Jie Chen and other teachers who were far away in the United States who were not able to be there. Professor Keng Zhou and the other three teachers took the stage and gave speeches. They all encouraged Yidi Ding to learn as much as he can from international masters after going to the United States.

The concert was a complete success. Two months later, Yidi will embark on a new journey to study in the US. I hope our little pianist will grow up to a professional master soon.

Yidi Ding, the 7-year-old Child Admitted to the Juilliard School

图片1.png

The Juilliard School

It is understood that this year, more than 6,000 outstanding candidates applied for the Juilliard School, having sent their own video works. No more than 100 candidates received the interview notification, and the admitted ones were even fewer. Yidi Ding successfully received the interview notice and went to New York for a second-round  audition in February this year. With the music flowing from his fingertips, full of life and soul, and integrating body and mind, Andy impressed all the professors and judges receiving unanimous approval. The jury commented that Ding Yidi had an innate ability to attract people’s attention to his performance. His rare ability is extremely important and valuable for professional pianists.

Yidi was born in Shanghai in August 2011. He received music enlightenment at four and a half. At age 5, he began to study piano formally and learned from Professor Keng Zhou, the Director of International Piano Academy of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music; James Brawn, the British pianist and Steinway artist; Professor Nianqu Liu, the famous composer and improviser, and Jin Man.

In the early morning of March 30, 2019, the heartening news came from the United States that Yidi Ding (English name: Andy Ding), the Chinese 7-year-old child was admitted to the Pre-College Department of the Juilliard School, which is thought of as the ‘Harvard of music schools’ in the music profession. It is reported that Andy will be the youngest student in the Juilliard School after enrolment in September.

The Juilliard School is one of the world’s top music institutes and gaining admission is even more difficult than Harvard University. Since its establishment in 1965, it has cultivated many top performers and achieved several generations of world-class artists. Artists like Miles Davis, the jazz musician; Robin Williams, the film star; James Levine, the director of the Metropolitan Opera House; John Williams, the popular composer in Hollywood; and Yo-Yo Ma, the most famous Chinese musician in classical music, all graduated from the Juilliard School.

Yidi Ding and his babies

IMG_1425.JPG

While listening to his father’s introduction, I was even more curious about how Yidi’s musical ability was cultivated. Yidi’s father told me that Yidi was a sunny, happy “little warm man” with a brilliant smile on his face. When he sat on the piano bench, he felt calm and affectionate. His piano sounds were as if an adult was playing; however, when he jumped off the piano bench, he was completely a childish boy, showing the lively and naughty side of a 7-year-old person. The most gratifying thing for his parents is that he is very caring, imaginative and full of love for life. There was a train made of cardboard boxes in his room with 52 woolly dolls in it. In his world, all the dolls were his babies and he was their father. Every day when practicing the piano, Yidi places a few dolls on the side of the piano to let them accept the “music enlightenment”. On the day of the second-round exam in New York, he passed a boutique store, staring at the furry bear in the window and couldn’t walk. He said, “Mom, he’s so lonely. He’s calling me Dad. He’s waiting for me to pick him up. Shall we take him home?” Later, his mother bought the bear, so during his days in New York, he slept with the bear every day and told the bear his stories of Juilliard’s exam.

It is precisely because of this kind of innocence that his imagination is well reflected in music. When playing Liszt’s music, he feels Liszt talking to him; when playing Bach’s music, he feels Bach lying in the music and listening to him. One day when he was playing Bach’s works, he suddenly stopped and said to his mother sitting beside him earnestly, “Mom, you see, I played Bach alive, and he sat up from the music.” His mother was shocked when she heard it, and it took a few minutes for her to recover. At that time, Yidi was only five years old. Yidi’s father also said that they attach great importance to the all-round development of children’s morality, intelligence and physique, and to the cultivation of his cultural heritage, because studying a subject to a high level must be based on one’s foundation and cultural heritage too. In order to let Yidi have a faster and higher development, Yidi's parents started a journey to find a teacher, and Teacher Jin was also very supportive. According to friends, Yidi’s parents found teacher Tang Shengsheng from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music who built a good foundation for Yidi. Later, he studied under teacher Jin Geping, and British pianist Steinway signed artist James Brawn. As soon as Professor Liu saw Yidi he officially accepted Yidi as his apprentice. Master Liu liked this youngest disciple very much, not only teaching him piano, but also composing and conducting.
